M.B.Om Podcast | Mastering the Business of Yoga

M.B.Om is a play on "M.B.A", and instead of learning about "administration" (whatever that is!), you will learn about the business of yoga. This podcast was designed for yoga teachers who want to create a successful and sustainable career in yoga, but don't know where to start, or how to take their career to the next level. Each episode features different, successful and inspiring yoga teachers who share their experiences in the yoga world, and the business lessons they have learned throughout their careers. Guests range from full-time yoga teachers, yoga studio owners, teachers who have branched off to create their own businesses, teachers who have developed their own teacher training, and much more.

This week I am joined by Nick Combs who is a yoga teacher, a yoga studio owner and the founder of M3 Yoga. Nick was formally a full-time nurse and discovered yoga after dealing with a back injury. Yoga helped heal him and he decided that he wanted to share his love of yoga with others. Nick started by teaching donation based yoga, and then slowly went through the process of recognizing his worth as a yoga teacher and decided to open his own studio, M3 Yoga. Now, M3 Yoga has a second location in Athens, GA and is running successful workshops and trainings.

On this episode, we talk about how Nick went from being a full-time nurse to a full-time yoga teacher and studio owner, the mindset shifts he had to go through to become a successful yoga teacher and studio owner, the business side of running a successful yoga studio, and much more.

On this episode, we talk about the money side of the yoga industry, why it's okay to make money as a yoga teacher, how to overcome your money stories, and much more.

If you've been listening to the podcast for a while now, you know that FavYogis has been sponsoring the podcast! After 6 months of using the app and working with them, I had the chance to interview the founder and CEO, Temitope Sonuyi.

Temitope is a yogi, yoga teacher, and a programmer! After experiencing challenges in his own yoga business he decided to design an app to solve those problems. As he started talking to more and more yoga teachers, he realized that he wasn't alone in his need for an app that allowed people to see your schedule at all yoga studios.

FavYogis launched just over a year ago and since then, the app has changed a lot. They've add functions including students being able can pay right from the app, allowing push notifications to your followers, a personal page that your students can look at without the app, the ability to add the app to your website, and so much more.

Of course, Temitope also shares some of the biggest lessons he's learned through his career!

A couple weeks ago, I had someone email in asking about how to build great relationships with studio owners, and how to leave situations that are negative or are not serving us anymore. This person continued to tell me that they are at a studio where they don't feel that they are being treated kindly, and personally, I am tired of hearing this. It is not okay for yoga teachers to just sit back and allow ourselves to be treated badly!

On this episode of the podcast, I talk about:

  • What to look for in a studio
  • How to build great relationships with studio owners
  • Why we need to respect ourselves as yoga teachers
  • How to find a great mentor
  • The importance of finding a space to teach that is a good fit for us and the studio owner
  • How to leave situations that are difficult
  • How to deal with negative feedback
  • The importance of being a great yoga teacher and respecting the studio owner

This week on the podcast we're doing something a little bit different! In this solo episode of the show, I am read through chapter 24 of You Are a Badass by Jen Sincero. I read this book in April and absolutely loved it, but the chapter on money was easily the most influential chapter for me.

On this episode, I read through the money chapter to you (chapter 24), while adding in my thoughts and giving some additional commentary on how we can break through our money stories, the importance of recognizing what our relationship with money is and how it is impacting our business, as well as how this chapter really helped me move past some of my biggest struggles with money.

This week on the podcast I am talking with Chris Cannon. Chris is the founder of Studio Prosperity and the host of The Studio Prosperity podcast. Chris and I had the pleasure of meeting in Mexico City and recording this in person!

On this episode, we talk about all things yoga studios and yoga business, including why it's okay to make money and still be spiritual, why software and systems are important in your yoga studio, the relationship between the studio owner and the teacher, and why being competitive can actually harm your business instead of make it thrive.

Enjoy!

I am joined on the podcast once again by Brea Johnson from Heart & Bones Yoga! Brea and I chatted about yoga + yoga business way back in Episode 8 of the podcast, and this time around, we are focusing our conversation how to take your yoga business online.

Brea shares the process for building her tribe online, including the importance of determining what you're going to offer and having good sound quality. As well, we talk about why you don't need to a big following to be successful online, and why it's more important to find your tribe and determine your "why" than just focus on having a big Instagram following.
